Nozbok's Raid - a 40k Battle Report

Catching up on the posting!

As ever, a video version of this battle report can be found here on YouTube.

Atop a small rise, Warboss Norbok squinted through the sights of his kustom shoota. A toothy grin split his melon like head as he sighting blue grey armour, “Der yo are, humees” Turning to face the rest of his warband, who were engaged in the kind of activity that any ork forced to wait around were want to engage in, namely kicking each other, shooting randomly, or mindlessly picking at noses, warts, scabs and all, he bellowed for silence.

“Right Den Boyz!, We’ze gottem! Da Wolfy Boyz is ova der, near dem bunkas! Time to get smashin!”

With a cheer, the ladz scattered into their individual mobz, and began to form up around the series of low rises approaching the line of old bunkers. Nozbok beckoned to a slightly more professional looking bunch of boyz lurking nearby, and the Kommando Kaptin, Skozenzy approached and saluted.

“I wantz you to get round behind dem, Skorzenzy. You’ze got dat? You’ze is good at sneakin, so getz to it!”

“Right boss. Soundz good to me boss”. With that, the Kommando turned, gesturing at his mob, and they disappeared into the bushes to work their way behind the space wolf lines.

Norzbok turned back to his bodyguards, who were waiting patiently, or at least, patiently for orks, besides him. He cuffed the nearest over the head in an affectionate manner, before dragging the mega armoured nob forwards. “Right den Gorritch, my lad. Time to krump some skullz!”

At the first signs of the Ork attack, Rikkhard had deployed his forces. A mighty Dreadnought had been directed to advance around the Ork’s right flank, whilst the attack bike and land speeder were deployed forward of the main space wolf line - the land speeder behind the central bunker, and the attack bike hidden amongst the jungle on his left flank. The bike squad formed up behind the land speeder, while the Long Fangs deployed in a bunker commanding the centre ground. As was tradition, Wolf Lord Rikkhard joined his blood claws, deploying amongst the verdant jungle foliage, waiting for the opportunity to attack.

With a lurch, the battlewagon drove forward, engine growling as it built up speed. Hrok’s boyz jumped out as it thundered past a patch of cacti, intending to ambush the attack bike with their stikkbombz. Two Goffs mistimed their leap from the vehicle, and stumbled and fell beneath its wheels, crying out in pain as they were run over. The brutal death of these two boyz shocked the mob, and they dashed into a nearby patch of jungle to steady their nerves before continuing.

The lone war buggy crept up besides the same clump of jungle trees, intent on finding an opportunity to blast the space wolves with its sun gun.

Peaking out of the hatch on top of the ork dreadnought, gobbitz could see only a few space wolves, crouching in a bunker in the distance. With a few kicks at the controls,he drove the machine forwards into the open ground, attempting to line up a shot with his las cannons. Behind him,Oddbitz the Weirdboy was pushed forwards by his minders so that his powers might be at least somewhat useful.

In the centre of the battlefield, Oggle’s grot mob and Warboss Nozbok’s nobz sprinted forwards, determined to get up nice and close with “da wolfy boyz”. Behind them, the Deathskullz and Mek Korbov settled down to watch for any targets that presented themselves.

A few moments later, Gobbitz finally remembered which button was used to fire the lascannons, and a bright beam of light stabbed out towards the space wolf lines, boring a hole through the helmet of the long fang with heavy bolter, and sending the marine crashing to the floor. With a cheer, the crew of the support weapons followed suit, though their fire was much less effective - a shell from the splatter canon richottehing around in the centre of the battlefield, far from any marine or ork, and a hastily lobbed pot from the squig catapult glanced off the side of a space wolf biker, but the squigs inside were clearly not interested in rubber and ceramite, and the biker emerged unharmed.

Oddbitz the weird boy tried to draw in the energy from the orks around him but lost control of the psychic energy as a green glow built up around him. Frantically, one of the Minderz bopped him on the head with a copper staff, returning the weirdboy to what was left of his senses. Across the battlefield, the Rune priest concentrated momentarily and summoned the power Prescience to give him advanced warning of events to come.

Gunning his engine, the driver of the attack bike steered towards the centre of the ork lines, intending to attempt a coup de grace and take out the ork nobility driving the horde forwards.

The land speeder burst from cover, speeding across open terrain between patches of jungle. The sudden burst of movement attracted the attention of the Deathskullz, who opened up on the speeding vehicle with their entire arsenal. Multimelta and plasma cannons spat superheated death, but the landspeeder pilot cooly adjusted his flight path to account for the searing blasts detonating around him. The only ork that did manage to hit the landspeeder was a lone boy with boltgun, and his bolts feebly impacted upon the land speeder chassis without causing any more damage than a slight scuffing of the paintwork. Behind the land speeder, the bike squad advanced cautiously, maintaining the cover of the central bunker between them and the orkish gunline.

On the other flank, Captain Rikkhard led the blood claws towards the Goffs, landing a few metres away from the cowering greenskins. The foremost three Bloodclaws unlatched frag grenades from their belts, and hurled the timed charges into the nearby jungle. The resulting blasts filled the air with shrapnel and splinters, shredding a Goff boy and the nob Hruk.

As they rounded the edge of a low rise, the gunner of the attack bike triggered his multimelta, sending a searing blast of heat into the midst of Nozbok’s bodyguards. Two nobz were caught in the blazing inferno, their armour melting in rivulets across their flesh. The remainder of the nobz remained cheery at this destruction, cackling in glee at the groans of their collapsing squadmates.

The Long Fangs, aware of the threat of an unchecked ork dreadnought marauding towards their lines, target the clanking contraption with all their firepower. A high energy blast from the heavy plasma gun ripped one of the powerclaws from the dreadnought’s frame, while a krak missile exploded harmlessly against the machine;s armoured legs. Lining up his weapon with the dreadnought’s centre of mass, the long fang with Lascannon triggered his weapon, sending a pulsing beam of light smashing through its armour and transfixing the gretchin pilot. As the grot slumped forwards, the dreadnought staggered and collapsed against the foot of a nearby hill.

Across the battlefield, the land speeder completed its circuit of the jungle, and opened up on the ork support weapons. A superheated blast from its multimelta slagged the squig catapult and incinerated its crew. The nearby gretchin manning the Splatta Cannon gibbered in alarm and ducked under the leaves of the nearby jungle fronds, as if this would provide more protection.

Held aloft by his minderz, Oddbitz drew in the orky Waaagh energy, this time managing to control the power coruscating through his body. The Rune Priest managed to summon the power of Prescience once more, but could only watch in horror as the ork weirdboy summoned first a pulsing green Death Wave to sweep across the battlefield towards the space wolves lines, and then to manifest a great green foot, which crashed down on the attack bike, which crushed the multimelta gunners to a pulp. By some strange quirk of fate, the bike itself escaped unharmed.

With a screech of breaks, the war buggy slewed around the jungle, lining up on the blood claws. Charging his gun to maximum power, its gunner let rip, but the crackling ball of energy exploded amongst the trees, leaving the Space Wolves unharmed and almost frying a goff hiding in the undergrowth.

Nearby, the now empty battlewagon crashed into the attack bike, damaging its controls, and sending it out of control.

In the centre of the field, the Gretchen edged forwards, maintaining a line between the orks and the approaching Space Wolf bikers. Deciding there wasn’t much point in advancing slowly towards the long fangs, Nozbok’s remaining nobz ran across behind the grotz, determined to have a crack at the bikers.

Spying an opportunity, Mek Korbov started up whirly gubbinz on his shock attack gun, opening a warp portal across the battlefield. Krundo the Runtherd poked at the nearby snotlings, herding 3 small groups into the swirling tunnel. Quite what horrors the snotlings encountered on their journey through warpspace remain uncertain, but it clearly had the desired effect, driving them berserk with fear and rage as they cascaded out of the tunnel onto the attack bike and battlewagon. A pack of rabid snotlings tore through the attack bike driver’s armour seals and carved open his neck, while more of their number materialised within the bike’s power junctions. A further snotling grappled with the battlewagon driver for control of its wheel, making it swerve dangerously from side to side.

Breaking into a chant about “Who’z got da biggest gun”, the Deathskullz decided to eliminate their competitions, and blazed away at the Long Fangs in the bunker. Protected from the worst of the firepower by the thick plasteel and armourcrete walls, only a single Long Fang fell, his missile launcher clattering to the ground as he was consumed by a miniature sun.

The glowing Death Wave continued its lazy journey across the battlefield, passing through the wildly swaying battlewagon but doing no damage to the occupants as they continued to wrestle for control. Oddbitz once again summoned a giant ectoplasmic green foot above the battlefield, intent on Kruching Wolf Lord Rikkhard and his Blood Claws, but they proved too nimble, dodging out of the way at the last moment.

The Rune Priest seized his chance to retaliate, and unleashed a burning Hellfire on Warboss Nozbok and his Nobz. The psychic flames blazed brightly about them, but they remained unconcerned by the heat.

The remaining Goffs, battered by grenades, put on a burst of Insane Courage, and barrelled out of the trees into the bloodclaws. The first boy to reach a space wolf died instantly, impaled on a chainsword, but the second somehow managed to drive his axe deep into Rikkhad’s armour, staggering the captain. Regaining his composure, Rikkhard lanced out his power sword at the third boy, cutting out his legs and sending him crashing to the floor. The final boy dueled ineffectually with a blood claw, but the mob had clearly decided it was better to go out fighting than being shredded by shrapnel.

Sensing that they would not all be needed to put down the remaining goffs, the rest of the Blood Claw pack charged into the warbuggy, engaging its crew in a dangerous game of chicken. Out of control and with both of its crew now dead, the attack bike swerved wildly across the battlefield towards the weirdboy, sparks flying as the remaining snotlings on board continued to shred its power systems.

Understandably not keen to allow the Death Wave to pass through them, the remaining Long Fangs redeployed to the lower half of their bunker.

In the centre of the battlefield, the Rune Priest ran up the steps to the top of the central bunker so he had a better view of his surroundings. Nearby, the bikers of Squad lurched round the edge of the bunker, bringing the gretchin screen into sight. Due to their formation, only two biker could line up shots, but both hit, the bolts detonating two gretchin to leave a gap in their line. The land speeder continued its sweep across the ork back lines, swinging across to line up its heavy flamer with the Deathskullz.

The Dreadnought stomped out of the bushes on the Ork’s right flank, and instantly opedning up with its assault cannon. A burst of shells smashed the weirdboy from his feet, and sent the minderz running for cover. Clearly something had gone wrong during its flank march through the jungle, as the liquid nitrogen system cooling its barrels failed, jamming the weapon and leaving it useless for the foreseeable future.

The Land Speeder’s gunner let loose a howl of joy as he triggered his heavy flamer, sending a roiling cloud of promethium across the Deathskullz. The painboy and a multimelta wielding boy were instantly burnt to a crisp, and a further boy and the nob set ablaze. Not content with this level of carnage, the Space Wolf loosened a blast from his multimelta, melting two boyz into piles of goo.

The close combat between the Blood Claws, Goffs and Buggy proved to be short, as Rikkhard dispatched the goff boy that had previously wounded him, while the last Goff was eviscerated by a chainsword wielding Blood Claw. The three marines that tad mobbed to Warbuggy made short work of its crew, slicing the apart in moments, and sending the buggy out of control.

The Death Wave continued its journey across the battlefield, passing harmlessly through the recently evacuated bunker and off into the distance. The Hellfire continues to burn, but with no effect as the mega armoured nobz medi squigs secreted cooling fluids to sooth their owners discomfort. Sensing that the Hellfire was not having its desired effect, the Rune Priest withdrew the energy sustaining the power.

Finally managing to wrestle control of the wheel back from the snotling he had been grappling with, the driver of the battlewagon looked up and cried out in alarm, as his vehicle smashed into the Long Fang’s bunker. One of the Battlewagon’s front wheels was knocked flying, and the crude machine shuddered to a halt, jammed at an awkward angle. Nearby, the crewless warbuggy trundled to a halt in a patch of nearby jungle, coming to rest amongst the trees.

Oddbitz minderz continued to flee, and only stopped when they managed to put a rock stack between them and the Space Wolves. Closeby, a clanking noise signalled the arrival of a further Ork Dreadnought from Reinforcements, which stomped along the valleys until it could see the Blood Claws.

In the centre of the battlefield, the mega nobz slowed their pace to a walk, and readied their pistols for a “bit of shootin”. Behind them on the hill, the Deathskullz nob did the burny dance, amusing the rest of his mob as he flailed and rolled around, before lying still on the ground. Sniggeing to themselves, the remaining Deathskullz lined up shots on the Space Wolves bikers, but had clearly been too interested in watching their former leader burn to death, and only managed to kill a single biker.

Determined to do better, the mega nobz unloaded their pistols on the bikers in front of them, unleashing a hail of bolts and plasma rounds. To their alarm, the bikers continued through the onslaught unscathed. To their rear, Warboss Nozbok had spied a more interesting target. Raising his Kustom Shoota, and lining it up on the land speeder’s pilot, he pulled the trigger, only to be rewarded with a sudden burst of sparks and flames as the gun detonated in his hand. Shaking his fist to relieve the sudden pain, he became uncomfortably aware that the Land Speeder pilot had noticed his predicament….

In a shocking display of competence amongst the chaos enveloping the ork lines, the grot piloting the newly arrived dreadnought lined his lascannons up with the nearest grey armoured figure he could see. 2 beams of crackling energy smashed Wolf Lord Rikkhard to the ground and amputated his leg cleanly at the knee.

No longer opposed by the powers of the Ork Weirdboy, the Rune Priest summoned a Gate in front of him, and charged through the simmering portal, to smash into a pair of Deathskullz. Sweeping his runestaff round in a brutal arc, he smashed both boyz to the floor, causing the last to panic and flee.

The riderless bike smashed into the bunker, while the out of control attack bike continued its journey across the field, squashing a pair of snotlings and causing the Runtherd to jump out of its path.

Keen to avenge their leader’s misfortune, the Blood Claws triggered their jump packs, sailing over towards the ork dreadnought. Behind them , the Long Fangs climbed back onto the top of the bunker.

In the centre of the battlefield, the bikers and land speeder swung round to engage the nobz mob. Spitting death from their bolters, the bikers managed to down two gretchin and riddled a heavy armoured nob with bolts. The land speeder unleashed a roiling cloud of burning promethium across the mob, singing Nozbok, and setting a meg nob ablaze. Nozbok stared across the shimmering air as the multimelta swivelled towards him, and started to mutter “Oh, Zoggin ‘eck” as the space wolf pulled the trigger, slagging both the Warboss and a Mega nob. Seeing their boss vanish in a ball of flame, and undoubtedly feeling a bit impotent after their volley had proven ineffectual, the nobz and grots broke, fleeing towards the rock formations crowning a nearby rise.

The minderz, feeling slightly more confident now that they had some cover, peaked round the rock and let loose a volley of bolts at the Blood Claws. This gesture proved futile, as the bolts exploded harmlessly around the Space Marines’ feet. The Ork dreadnought continued to stomp round the valley bottom, and spied the Space Wolves counterpart. Once again, its lascannons lashed out, and once again, the grot in charge proved surprisingly competent, as the Space Wolf’s Assault cannon was blown off in a spectacular explosion.

Suddenly aware of the Blood Claws before him, Mek Korbov once again started up his Shokk Attack gun, but his hurried response was to be his downfall, as the weapon exploded in a ball of flames, knocking him to the ground.

Determined to exterminate as many as the greenskins scum as possible, the Rune Priest once again lashed out with a Hellfire, targeting the Nobz and Grotz hiding amongst the rocks. Four gretchin exploded in flames, and the rest scattered, never to be seen again.

Behind the smoking remains of Korbov’s Shokk Attack gun, the snotlings infesting the attack bike finally chewed through the wrong cable, and the out of control vehicle detonated in a massive fireball, sending the Runtherd crashing to the ground and leaving him groaning in pain.

The bikers rounded the nearby patch of jungle, and plugged the cowering Splatta Cannon crew with bolts, ending their miserable lives. The Land Speeder continued its rampage of destruction, sailing off in pursuit of the mega nobz, and melting the remaining two as they attempted to hide in the rock stacks.

Not to be outdone in the efforts to put paid to all the remaining orks, the Lascannon armed Long Fang blasted the battlewagon’s driver, ending the ork’s life in an instant blinding flash.

The Blood claws, incensed by the minderz attempting to shoot them, launched themselves at the pair of orks, and swiftly sliced them apart.

Infuriated by the loss of his assault cannon, the Dreadnought charged his orkish counterpart, but once again the grot proved to be shockingly competent, as he tore the Space Wolf’s remaining arm off with his power claws. Victorious, the grot stomped off into the jungle, leaving the Space Wolves to pick over the battlefield. Nozbok’s Waagh had been ended, cleanly and efficiently.

Later that evening, long after the Space Wolves had departed, Skorznzy’s Kommandos picked over the field of dead orks. A trinket here, a few teef there. A shiny gun or blade, available for the taking. Good pickings, for those with patience. The Kommandos had spent their day sat quietly behind the space wolf lines as they had been told to do, but had made no move to join in the carnage. “Not in our Orderz”, Skorznzy had said. “We wuz told to go round da back, but not owt else”.

As he rolled over one of the charred mega nobz, a power fist grasped Skorznzy’s tunic, and a baleful red eye fixed him in its gaze.

“Yooze is gonna be useful, diss time” gasped Nozbok. It was hard to tell where the ork ended, and his armour began, the two having been melted together by the superheated melta blast.

“Gerruz to da doc, or I’ll be rippin out your windpipez, ya slimey git!”

Results:

Orks: 7 victory points

Space Wolves: 25 victory points

Casualties:

Wolf Lord Rikkhard rolled on the Necromunda chart to see what damage had occured - resulting in a smashed leg. Given he is a Space Marine, we figured that it would be replaced pretty quickly with a bionic leg, so he will have this as a freebie in following games

Nozbok ended up with an Old Battle Wound - he's going to have to take a trip to the Doc's (courtesy of the GorkaMorka charts).

Somehow everyone else ended up with a full recovery.

This was a bit one sided, with the Orks not managing to do a great deal, and generally getting mopped up by the Space Wolves, although it was still a fun game (downright hilarious at times, considering the ineptitude of the Orks throughout).

To an extent, the Space Wolves list here is pretty good for this kind of thing it's very fast, but has a good deal of firepower as well. The Orks were pretty much a collection of the units I have finished painting, and suffer a bit from that point of view - which means I need to get painting more stuff for them to give them a few more options.
